Robert J. Rathmell
Robert J. Rathmell has over 16 years of experience resolving complex and high-conflict family law cases. He approaches litigation with strategic precision and is frequently called upon as the closer to settle difficult disputes. As a seasoned trial advocate, Robert handles division of assets and debts; reimbursement claims; setting aside judgments; child and spousal support; and contested custody issues including special needs considerations, mental health emergencies, substance abuse and rehabilitation matters, and child abuse concerns. His practice also includes national and international child relocation; multi-jurisdictional litigation; and domestic violence matters.

Robert litigates in courts throughout Northern California, including San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Marin, and Sonoma Counties. Before joining Laughlin Legal, PC as partner in 2025, he served as a partner and senior counsel at respected San Francisco family law firms.
Outside the office, Robert is a musician, writer and husband, continuing his lifelong engagement with piano and the arts.
