Divorce planning in the summer

Experts say that the best time for California residents to begin planning a divorce is during the summer. The results of a study conducted at the University of Washington show that divorce filings tend to increase during August and March. The researchers discovered the biannual pattern of divorce filings by examining divorce filings in Washington that were dated from 2001 to 2015.

If a marriage is experiencing complications, those complications can become worse if the couple has to spend more time in each other’s company. The increase in divorce filings occurs when such couples are able to resume their routines.

Attorneys have reported that the uptick in divorce filings also occurs into September when schools reopen for the year. The increase returns in January with the arrival a new year. However, according to attorneys, what should be prioritized is the planning of a divorce regardless of the timing.

Divorce planning should take place months before a divorce petition is actually filed. People who are considering getting a divorce should speak with an attorney, financial adviser and trusted family members. They should consider whether a divorce is the right solution for their marital issues and decide what they want to obtain from the divorce.

They should also begin collecting important information about what is in their savings and checking accounts. A comprehensive list of assets should be made, and records for phone calls and credit cards should also be assembled if necessary.

A family law attorney may help clients through the divorce process. The attorney may consider the factors of a case and a client’s desired divorce settlement terms and then recommend certain legal strategies for obtaining the desired outcome. Litigation might be used to resolve disputes regarding the division of assets, spousal support and child custody.
